Our Hometown: Al-Fasakin (Today Basateen)

Our hometown was historically known as Al-Fasakin, and today it is called Basateen. It is located in the Chahaar Aley region of Mount Lebanon, overlooking the city of Beirut. For generations, this village has been the heart of our family’s history and daily life.

Basateen lies at an elevation of approximately 650 meters (2,170 feet) above sea level. Its higher altitude provides a cooler climate and fertile land, which historically allowed families to live from agriculture, orchards, and seasonal crops. The village is also known for its beautiful panoramic views of Beirut and the Mediterranean Sea, views that have inspired and sustained its people for centuries.

In earlier times, life in Al-Fasakin was simple and deeply connected to nature. Families lived close to one another, sharing work, harvests, celebrations, and traditions. Community values such as respect for elders, cooperation, faith, and strong family ties were central to everyday life. These values continue to shape the identity of the village and its families today.

Basateen is home to approximately 2,500 people, mainly from five families: Ghosn, Rafeh, Abdelsalam, Merhi, and Al Alia. Together, these families formed the social, cultural, and historical foundation of the village, passing traditions, values, and stories from one generation to the next.

The village is surrounded by important neighboring towns and areas, including Aramoun, Kabrchmoun, Ain Ksour, Ainab, and the greater Beirut area. This location allowed Basateen to remain closely connected to nearby municipalities while preserving its rural character and strong sense of community.

Basateen is also known for its natural water spring (Ain), which has long provided fresh water for the local population and was a vital resource in daily village life. The village includes a Mazar, a place of spiritual and cultural significance, as well as old traditional houses that preserve the memory and lifestyle of past generations. In addition, Basateen has a semi-Olympic football field, which serves as a gathering place for youth, sports, and community events.

Basateen represents our roots, our shared heritage, and the place where our family story began — a land of memories, traditions, and enduring bonds that continue to unite us across generations and around the world.
